The risks of passive smoking
Smoking is bad for your health, everybody knows that, but also passive smoking, always working as a silent gun, can be very dangerous. Let’s see why.
First of all, what is passive smoking?
Passive smoking is essentially the smoke we breath when someone else around us lights a cigarette or the “contaminated” air of a smoking area we pass through.
In fact, traditional cigarettes can transform our living room or the cabin of our car into a real gas chamber. For this reason, nowadays many countries are considering the possibility of extending “no smoking rules” to every public space or to the ones that are particularly crowded, as it already happens in many states, especially in America.
E-cigarettes, in which sector KIWI is a market leader, are different by means of features and functioning, because no combustion takes place.
Why is passive smoking dangerous?
The question pops up spontaneously. In fact, one could think that because we don’t directly inhale the smoke produced from the burning of tobacco, paper and all the chemical components involved in the process, we stay immune from the health risks associated with cigarettes. That’s not the case.
First of all, our lungs are highly damaged by the indirect effect of passive smoking, which occludes our respiratory tracts. Besides that, passive smoking is one of the most common causes of cancer and, a study conducted by the WHO in May 2021, indicates that it provokes the death of some 800.000 people a year all around the world.
The worst thing is that our condition of passive smokers can sink its roots deep in our past. As a matter of fact, if our parents are smokers, our house, the cabin of the car they drive and, as a consequence, all of our trips can constitute moments in which we become victims of passive smoking at a very early age.
A situation like that forces us to live in an unhealthy environment, which in time can bring us to develop tumors. The most common ones, besides lung cancer, are mouth cancer, throat cancer and rectal cancer.
How bad is passive smoking for our health?
Really, really bad. Let’s just think about asthma, emphysema and strokes. Passive smoking doesn’t only give rise to tumors, but is one of the main reasons for these diseases, bringing up the probability of developing one by 20% to 80%.
And there is another myth to dispel, the one that says that “a couple cigarettes every day are not bad for our health”. That is a superstitious belief, pretty far from the reality of things.
In fact, we need to keep in mind that the residues of cigarettes and its chemical components accumulate in our organism even for long periods of time, and that it doesn't exist a number of cigarettes, although very small, that keeps us safe from the risks associated with smoking. That is especially true for passive smokers, who are victims of active smokers.
It has been calculated, through many clinical trials, that as little as fifteen cigarettes produce cellular mutations inside our organism. This doesn’t mean that smoking fifteen cigarettes will make us develop some kind of cancer, but the risks associated with that remain high.
One thing is certain: if active smoking is bad, passive smoking is not less risky. And, due to the minor attention dedicated to this delicate topic, we should take capillary information about it and do our best to sensitize the opinion of others.
